What is an Externship?

Externships are opportunities for students to gain hands-on training under professional guidance while completing their academic coursework. HOPE Clinic's robust team offers externship opportunities in both its front and back offices. Externship opportunities are offered depending upon supervisor and site availability.

Externship Pathway

Externship placement is a complex process that can take anywhere from 6 months - 2 months of advance processing before the externship can begin. Timelines will vary depending on your program type and school. We highly recommend that you work with your academic externship advisor to find a list of affiliated institutions first for ease of processing.

Here is a general timeline of how externships are processed at HOPE Clinic:

1. The academic externship coordinator or the student will apply for an externship opportunity at HOPE Clinic.

Placement is highly dependent on factors such as the externship timing, duration, site location, specialty, program, language access, school, and supervisor availability. Students are highly encouraged to apply to multiple external sites in the event that HOPE Clinic is not available to host, or is unable to respond to your application. Due to the amount of requests and applications we receive, it is not possible for us to respond to every request. We ask that if you do not hear a response from, then please assume that your application was not able to be processed at the time.

2. An Affiliation Agreement (AA) or a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between your school and HOPE Clinic is either confirmed or established.

Before any placement can be established, an agreement must be executed between your school and HOPE Clinic. For student's who's school is already affiliated with HOPE Clinic, this process is significantly shorter and their request can be processed within days to weeks. For students who's school is not currently affiliated, this process can be significantly longer and may take months to establish.

3. Once approved for placement, the student will complete all required onboarding paperwork, document submissions, screenings, training, and orientation.

HOPE Clinic requires externs to complete all required onboarding tasks which include having a recent background check and drug test screening completed and submitted. Vaccination records may be requested depending upon the program. Online training modules and orientation will be provided. This process can take up to 2 weeks to complete.

4. Once fully onboarded, the student will receive their first day welcome email and can begin their externship as scheduled.

Congratulations! The student has been successfully placed for their externship!
